Crochet Christmas Tree Gift Card Holder

Updated: Jun 30, 2023

My Crochet Christmas Tree Gift Card Holder is a free pattern here on my blog! This beginner friendly holiday pattern is a quick way to add a handmade touch to your gifts! Scroll down for the free pattern.

Pattern Design + Construction:

This holiday crochet project works up so quickly using only the single crochet stitch, which makes it perfect for beginners and a really great crochet Christmas gift accessory. It also matches my Crochet Christmas Tree Cozy design perfectly! These two would pair well together along with a Starbucks mug and gift card!

Each Crochet Christmas Tree Gift Card Holder consists of the base, which is crocheted in flat rows to create a long rectangle. The rectangle is folded and a border closure is added to the sides. The tree is stitched on using a tapestry needle and the button is attached using a traditional needle and thread. The finished gift card holder measures approximately 3.5 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide.

Yarn:

This free pattern is created using medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn. I really enjoy designing projects using worsted weight yarn since it wears well while also being soft and cozy. It's the weight of yarn I consistently have on hand in a variety of colors. Below I've listed the specific brands and colors I've used, but you could easily substitute worsted weight as long as the ounces per gram are similar!

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 20 / Ivory

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 260 / Light Sage

Another great option is Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz. / 198 g in the colors Aran and Tea Leaf.

Gift Card Holder Base:

With cream yarn, chain 11

Rows 1-28: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (10 stitches)

Shaping & Seam:

  • Without tying off, fold the long rectangle in half (it creates a gift card shape).

  • Our hook is still on the top left side, we're going to single crochet down the left side, joining the front and back together.

  • At the bottom left corner, chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.

Other side:

  • Join at the bottom right side, single crochet the front and back of the right side together.

  • When we reach the top right, chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.

The top will remain open for our gift card.

Weave in any loose ends and trim any excess yarn.

Christmas Tree Embellishment:

You can certainly stitch on the little tree and star before joining the sides, but I prefer to add it at the end. This way I can see exactly how it will look on the finished piece. You're the creator here, do what works best for you.

I recommend referencing my video tutorial for the Christmas Tree Cozy design so get a visual for how the tree is stitched onto the gift card holder. The difference will be, we are working the tree onto the front side of our gift card holder instead of a coffee sleeve.

  • Using a tapestry needle and light sage yarn, create one vertical stitch from top to bottom in the center of your work. I call this the 'base' of the tree.

  • Then, create seven 'zig-zags' across the base (each zig-zag will have two pass-throughs of yarn).

  • These zig-zags will gradually get smaller as you work toward the top of the tree base.

  • Leave a little space at the top of the base for the wooden snowflake star.

  • Tie off and trim any excess yarn (this portion was easiest for me to turn the gift card holder inside out).

  • Using a traditional needle and thread, attach the snowflake button to the top of the tree securely.
