Pattern Design + Construction:

I am in love with these tiny hearts and the sweater-weather vibe of this crochet cup cozy! Alternating between single crochet and half double crochet stitches while utilizing the back loop only technique creates an elegant look without adding difficulty. This free crochet pattern works up really quickly and makes the perfect crochet gift. You could easily change the yarn colors for any season!

This Crochet Tiny Heart Cozy consists of the coffee sleeve base, which is crocheted in flat rows to create a textured rectangle. The tiny hearts are stitched onto the cozy using a tapestry needle. The coffee sleeve base is then seamed together also using a tapestry needle. Our finished coffee cozy measures approximately 4" tall by 4" wide when lying flat. Another fun feature of this pattern: it can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the mug size adjustment detail further below for instructions).

Yarn:

This cozy pattern calls for medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn. I love working with worsted weight yarn since it's versatile and available in most local craft stores. The price is also usually very affordable. Worsted weight yarn is great for coffee sleeves since most can be washed and dried. Once again, the color possibilities for this Tiny Heart Cozy are endless!

I'm using the following yarn colors in this tutorial. Of course, you can substitute different brands as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 20 / Ivory

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 154 / Burnt Pumpkin

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 101 / Rosy Cheeks

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Cherry Red

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 28 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 29 and each row will be 28 stitches.

Coffee Sleeve Base:

With the yarn color of your choice, chain 35

Rows 1-2: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Row 3: SC in each stitch, chain 2 (34 stitches)

Row 4: HDC in each stitch, chain 2 (34 stitches)

Rows 5-9: HDC in each stitch (back loop only), chain 2 (34 stitches)

Rows 10: HDC in each stitch (back loop only), chain 1 (34 stitches)

Rows 11-13: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail and pull through the chain to secure.

Tiny Hearts:

Using a yarn needle and the tiny heart yarn color of your choice, we're going to stitch little 'V's along the top and bottom of our cozy.

Since we have three rows of SC at the top and bottom, this provides the perfect little space to create the hearts. I place them along the middle row of SC with 2 stitches in between each. The yarn is carried across the back side of the cozy.

I've made this crochet cozy using two pass-throughs through each side of the heart (see the orange and cream version) and also with one pass-through (see the pink and red version). The key is not to pull the stitches too tight.

Cozy Assembly / Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (hearts on the inside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.

  • Trim any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.
