Pattern Design + Construction:

Crochet coasters are a quick and easy way to add a handmade, affordable and functional touch to any space. I absolutely love to design crochet patterns for adorable little animals so why not an alien that fits nicely under your favorite mug?! This pattern is quick and makes a great gift idea for any alien fans in your life.

This Crochet Alien Coasters pattern is also versatile! You could easily string these cuties together to make a garland or use it as an applique or gift tag accessory. I would classify this pattern as beginner level since the most challenging stitch is the magic circle.

Each Crochet Alien Coaster consists of the coaster base and two ears that are stitched together using a tapestry needle. The finished coaster base measures 3 inches and the ears measure 2 inches; the assembled coaster from ear to ear measures 6.5 inches. You could easily create a larger version by increasing crochet hook and yarn sizes.

Yarn:

For this free pattern, we'll be using medium (4) worsted weight yarn. I really enjoy using worsted weight yarn for most of my projects because of the versatility as well as the availability in most craft stores. Worsted weight yarn also tends to come in very affordable brands. You can easily substitute with other brands and colors as long as the ounces per gram are similar. I've used the following colors for this project:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g. in the color Frosty Green

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 260 / Light Sage

The Frosty Green is a shade lighter than the Light Sage. I've used both colors to make sets of these coasters and must admit I prefer the Light Sage.

The ear before the slip stitch border.

Ear Border:

Chain 1, continue down the left side with a round of slip stitches around the entire ear (chaining 1 in each corner).

Where to place the chain 1's on the ear border.

When you arrive back to the top of the ear, slip stitch into the top, chain 1.

Tie off pulling through the chain stitch to secure and weave in the loose end at the tip of the ear; we will leave the long tail from the beginning.

All of the pieces of the crochet alien coaster ready for assembly.

Assembly:

With the slip stitch border on the ears facing up: Using the long tail from the beginning of the ear and a tapestry needle, stitch the two corners of the bottom of the ear together. They 'roll' inward to create the curve of the ears.

Using the same tail, attach the ears to the coaster with the coaster edge on top of the bottom of the ears.

Weave in and trim any excess yarn on the back side of the coaster.
