Harry Potter Coffee Cozy - Free Crochet Pattern

Hello, hi & welcome back! I am so excited to bring you my Harry Potter Coffee Cozy Free Crochet Pattern! Nothing gets me more into the fall spirit than listening to the Harry Potter audio books in my car. Jim Dale does such an amazing job with all of the voices, I get lost in the story every time. This Harry Potter coffee sleeve is the perfect mug companion and gift idea for the Hogwarts fan in your life!

This Harry Potter Coffee Cozy is comprised of the coffee sleeve base which is crocheted in rows to create a flat rectangle, the glasses and the lightning bolt scar which are stitched onto the base using a tapestry needle. The coffee sleeve base is seamed together at the end using a tapestry needle. The finished coffee cozy measures approximately 4" tall by 4" wide when lying flat. This pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

Stitches:

This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

  • Chain

  • SC - Single Crochet

  • SC Drop Stitch (we will just be dropping to the row directly beneath the working row)

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 28 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 29 and each row will be 28 stitches.

Coffee Sleeve Base:

For each color change, leave a long enough tail to use for stitching a seam.

With maroon, chain 35

Rows 1-2: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

on the last stitch of the 2nd row, switch to gold

Rows 3-4: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

on the last stitch of the 4th row, switch to maroon

Rows 5-6: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

on the last stitch of the 6th row, switch to beige

Rows 7-16: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

on the last stitch of the 16th row, switch to black

Row 17: SC, SC drop stitch* chain 1 (34 stitch)

Row: 18: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Trim yarn and pull through the chain stitch to secure

Glasses:

With black, chain 44

Slip stitch into the 20th stitch from the hook and tie off with a long tail. This gives us one of the 'lenses' to work with.

Using a yarn needle and the long tail, stitch on the glasses. You want to make each lens as round as possible and the bridge will be slightly curved.

We will have 20 stitches per lens and 4 stitches for the bridge.

Lightning Scar:

Using a yarn needle and gold yarn, stitch a little lightning bolt scar on his forehead.

Assembly / Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side out (face on the inside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, stitch the rough ends together. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • I like to tie off by double/triple knotting the tails together on the inside and trimming any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.

Eyes (Optional):

Secure two green safety eyes and trim the excess post with a wire cutter so it will lay as flat as possible against the mug.
