Pattern Design + Construction:

This Valentine's Day crochet project works up so quickly, which makes it perfect for quick gift ideas! This pattern is designed to fit a standard sized gift card, money, a Valentine, small candy, or jewelry! It is the perfect thoughtful gift holder for your true love, best friend, family member, barista, or yourself!

Each Crochet Heart Envelope Gift Card Holder consists of one large rectangle crocheted in flat rows and decreased to a point. The rectangle is folded and seamed together on the sides with a border to create an envelope. The heart applique is crocheted separately and stitched onto the envelope using a tapestry needle. The finished crochet envelope measures slightly larger than a standard sized gift card. You could easily create a larger sized envelope by using a larger hook and bulkier yarn.

Yarn:

This free crochet pattern is created using medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn. I really enjoy designing projects using worsted weight yarn since it wears well while also being soft and cozy. It's the weight of yarn I consistently have on hand in a variety of colors. Below I've listed the specific brands and colors I've used, but you could easily substitute worsted weight as long as the ounces per gram are similar!

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color White

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Flamingo

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Hot Red

Row 28: DEC, chain 1 (1 stitch)

Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.

Weave in the ends and trim any excess yarn.

*NOTE: You're certainly welcome to attach the heart to the envelope base before adding the border. I've been asked this a few times. Honestly, it's a personal preference so choose the option that works best for you! I like to add it to the completed envelope so I can see exactly where it will lay on the finished item.

Shaping the Envelope by adding a Border:

With the point facing the top, fold the bottom corners up to the 20th row (making a double-sided rectangle with a single triangle top).

Join to the bottom right corner through the front and back of the envelope and begin working a row of single crochet up the side joining the front and back.

When you reach the beginning of the triangle, continue single crocheting up to the point (chain 1 at the tip of the point) and down the other side.

When you reach the left side of the envelope where the front and back meet, continue to join them together just like the right side.

When you reach the bottom left corner and the border is complete, Chain 1, tie off pulling through the chain stitch to secure.

Weave in the loose ends and trim any excess yarn.

Crochet Heart Applique:

With your heart yarn color of choice,

In a magic circle:

  • chain 3

  • 3 TC

  • 3 DC

  • chain 1

  • 1 TC

  • chain 1

  • 3 DC

  • 3 TC

  • chain 3

  • slip stitch

  • chain 1

Pull the loose end of the magic circle tight, creating the heart.

Tie off with a long tail and pull through that chain 1 to secure.

Tie both tails together on the back side to secure.

Attach the Crochet Heart Applique:

Using the long tails on your heart applique and a tapestry needle, attach the heart to the front side of the envelope. Be careful not to stitch through both sides so that you can still open the envelope. I like to place stitches around the outer edges of the heart to make sure it's nice and secure.

Tie off on the inside and trim any excess yarn.
