Crochet Unicorn Purse

The Crochet Unicorn Purse is an adorable crochet hand bag that makes an excellent crochet gift idea! Below you'll find the free pattern complete with step by step photos.

The Crochet Unicorn Purse adds a magical flare to a beginner friendly crochet accessory. It is an amigurumi style purse or hand bag sized for an approximately 3-6 year old, but is versatile for any age. This pattern is fairly quick to complete and fun!

This crochet hand bag consists of the purse base, which is worked in rounds and the strap. The crochet flowers, ears and horn are crocheted separately and sewn onto the purse base using a tapestry needle. We will also be adding a little face with a tapestry needle. The finished Unicorn Purse measures 5 inches wide by 7.5 inches tall with a 12 inch purse strap; however the strap is adjustable.

I'm using medium (4) worsted weight yarn for my crochet Unicorn Purse design. I enjoy working with worsted weight yarn since it's versatile and wears well. You could easily substitute for another worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

With white yarn,

Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)

Round 2: INC in each stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3: INC, SC in the next stitch* (18 stitches)

Round 4: INC, SC in the next 2 stitches* (24 stitches)

Rounds 5-6: SC in each stitch (24 stitches)

Round 7: INC, SC in the next 11 stitches* (26 stitches)

Rounds 8-10: SC in each stitch (26 stitches)

Round 11: INC, SC in the next 12 stitches* (28 stitches)

Round 12: INC, SC in the next 13 stitches* (30 stitches)

Round 13: INC, SC in the next 9 stitches* (33 stitches)

Round 14: INC, SC in the next 10 stitches* (36 stitches)

Round 15: INC, SC in the next 11 stitches* (39 stitches)

Round 16: INC, SC in the next 12 stitches* (42 stitches)

Rounds 17-20: SC in each stitch (42 stitches)

Round 21: DEC, SC in the next 12 stitches* (39 stitches)

Round 22: DEC, SC in the next 11 stitches* (36 stitches)

Slip stitch, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.

Weave in the ending tail and the beginning tail from the magic circle. Trim any excess yarn.

*You can adjust the chain amount for the strap length of your choice. This tutorial is sized for an approximately 3-6 year old child.

With white yarn, chain 101

Row 1: HDC in each stitch, chain 1 (100 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail.

Set aside.

With white yarn,

Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)

Rounds 2-3: SC in each stitch (6 stitches)

Round 4: INC, SC in the next 2 stitches* (8 stitches)

Round 5: INC, SC in the next 3 stitches* (10 stitches)

Round 6: SC in each stitch (10 stitches)

Slip stitch, tie off with a long tail.

Using pink yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch a triangle shape onto each ear (only on one side, which will be the front). Tie off and trim the excess yarn on the inside.

Using the long white tail and a tapestry needle, sew the bottom of the ear closed so it is flat.

Set aside.

With yellow/gold yarn,

Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)

Rounds 2-3: SC in each stitch (6 stitches)

Round 4: INC, SC in the next 5 stitches (7 stitches)

Round 5: INC, SC in the next 6 stitches (8 stitches)

Round 6: INC, SC in the next 7 stitches (9 stitches)

Round 7: INC, SC in the next 8 stitches (10 stitches)

Round 8: INC, SC in the next 9 stitches (11 stitches)

Slip stitch, tie off with a long tail.

Add a little stuffing.

Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, sew the bottom of the horn closed.

Set aside.

We will be making three flowers for our unicorn purse.

With the flower color yarn of your choice,

Chain 12 (hold that 12th stitch), plus three more (15 stitches)

DC twice into the 12th chain you held (the fourth chain from your hook)

Place 3 DC in each chain until the end.

Chain 1, tie off with a long tail.

It will naturally begin to curl into a spiral. Roll the spiral into a flower shape and using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the bottom of the flower together (basically using the foundation chain stitches to keep the flower shape secure).

Set aside.

*Optional Hair: You could also use the spiral curls as hair instead of flowers if you'd like.

Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, stitch the ears onto the top edges of the front side of the purse.

Stitch the horn in the center of the ears on the front side of the purse.

Next, stitch the flowers underneath the horn and ears like a headband of sorts.

Making sure it's not twisted, attach the strap. One side will already have a long tail but the other side will need a new strand of yarn for attachment.

Using black yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch some cute eyes onto the front side of the purse.

I recommend tying off in between the eyes and nose so you can't see the black yarn through the project.

Once everything is tied off and the ends are weaved in, trim any excess yarn.

I think the only thing that could elevate this design would be to add a cloth liner to the inside of the bag.
