Pattern Design + Construction:

The Crochet Unicorn Cozy adds a magical flare to your morning brew and a bit of happiness to your day! This pattern is quick and beginner friendly, using just a few basic stitches. The base of the pattern can also be adjusted to fit your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

This coffee cozy consists of the base which is worked in flat rows to create a rectangle. The ears and unicorn horn are worked directly onto the base. The flowers are crocheted separately and attached to the base with a tapestry needle. The coffee cozy is also seamed up using a tapestry needle. The finished Crochet Unicorn Cozy measures approximately 4" tall and 4.5" wide when lying flat.

Yarn:

I chose medium (4) worsted weight yarn for my crochet Unicorn Cozy design. I enjoy working with worsted weight yarn for coffee sleeves since it is versatile and wears well. You could easily substitute for another worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

For this tutorial, I'm using the following yarn colors:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Bright Yellow

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Minty

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Lavender

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Flamingo

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color White

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black

Crochet Unicorn Cozy - Free Pattern

This magical mug companion makes an quick crochet gift idea!

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.

*You'll want to consider the ears and horn in your size adjustment and make sure they end up evenly spaced. This will depend on how many stitches you increase or decrease the base chain. The goal is to have the entirety of both ears visible on the edges of your mug when looking straight forward. So adjust the number of stitches in-between the ears accordingly to what looks best on your mug!*

Coffee Cozy Base:

With white yarn, chain 35

Rows 1-12: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail, pulling through the last chain 1 stitch to secure.

Unicorn Ears:

With white yarn, join in the 11th stitch of the base counting from right to left.

Row 13: SC in the next 5 stitches, chain 1 (5 stitches)

Row 14: DEC, SC in the next 3 stitches, chain 1 (4 stitches)

Row 15: DEC, SC in the next 2 stitches, chain 1 (3 stitches)

Row 16: DEC, SC in the next stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)

Row 17: DEC, chain 1 (1 stitch)

Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end, pulling through the chain stitch to secure.

Skip 4 stitches and repeat Rows 13-17.

Unicorn Horn:

With yellow yarn, join in the 15th stitch (the same stitch as the end of the right ear).

Row 13: SC in the next 6 stitches, chain 1 (6 stitches)

Row 14: DEC, SC in the next 4 stitches, chain 1 (5 stitches)

Row 15: DEC, SC in the next 3 stitches, chain 1 (4 stitches)

Row 16: DEC, SC in the next 2 stitches, chain 1 (3 stitches)

Row 17: DEC, SC in the next stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)

Row 18: DEC, chain 1 (1 stitch)

Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end, pulling through the chain stitch to secure.

Weave in all the loose ends on the ears and horn.

Flowers (Make 3):

With the flower color of your choice, Chain 8

Row 1: 2 SC in each stitch across, chain 1 (14 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail and pull through the chain stitch to secure.

It will naturally start to curl so we will just curl it into a circle/spiral flower!

Using a tapestry needle, secure the underside together and attach the flowers to the coffee cozy base below the horn.

Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (flowers on the inside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.

  • Trim any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.

*You can certainly add the eyes before seaming up the cozy, but I prefer to add them afterward so I can see exactly how they will look once completed.

Crochet Unicorn Eyes:

Using a tapestry needle and black yarn, stitch two cute semicircle eyes below the flowers. My semicircle is essentially a wide capital letter V that isn't too tight so it curves.

Tie off on the inside and trim any excess yarn.
