Crochet Teacher Gift - Apple, Pencil & Paper Coffee Cozy

Updated: Jul 3, 2023

The free pattern for my Crochet Teacher Gift set is here on my blog! This set of three free crochet patterns includes an Apple, Pencil and Paper coffee cozy! I've also included a video tutorial down below!

Pattern Design + Construction:

Back to school season is here and this set of coffee cozies makes the perfect handmade teacher appreciation gift idea! These adorable school-themed coffee cozies pair perfectly with a Starbucks gift card and/or a cute mug. The patterns are designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug, but can easily be adjusted to fit your mug of choice (more details on pattern size adjustment down below).

These crochet teacher gifts are extremely beginner friendly! They also work up super quickly, which is nice if you have multiple educators in your life!

Each crochet coffee cozy consists of the base which is worked in flat rows to create a rectangle and any embellishments are added to the base. The coffee cozy is then seamed up using a tapestry needle. The finished coffee sleeves measure approximately 4" tall and 4.5" wide when lying flat.

Yarn:

For this free pattern, we'll be using medium (4) worsted weight yarn. It's the perfect size and durability for a crochet coffee cozy and most of us have worsted weight yarn on hand in a variety of colors (don't we?...can't be just me). I enjoy using Red Heart Super Saver yarn because of its availability in most craft stores and the affordable price per skein. You could easily substitute for other brands and colors as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

For the Pencil Coffee Cozy, I'm using the following colors:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Saffron

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Buff

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Gray Heather

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Flamingo

For the Apple Coffee Cozy, I'm using the following colors:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Cherry Red

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Paddy Green

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Café Latte

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black

For the Paper Coffee Cozy, I'm using the following colors:

Mug Size Adjustment

This free pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.

Crochet Pencil Coffee Cozy

Pencil Coffee Cozy Base:

(With each color change, tie off with a long enough tail to use for joining)

With pink, chain 35

Rows 1-2: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

on the last stitch of the 2nd row, switch to gray

Row 3: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

on the last stitch of the 3rd row, switch to yellow

Rows: 4-10: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Crochet Apple Coffee Cozy

Apple Cozy Base:

Tie off with a long tail and pull through the chain stitch to secure.

Crochet Leaf:

With green, chain 9

SC, HDC, DC, TC, DC, HDC, SC, Slip Stitch, chain 1

Turn and keep going down the other side of the chain stitches

Slip Stitch, SC, HDC, DC, TC, DC, HDC, SC, Slip Stitch

Chain 1 and tie off with a long tail, pulling through that chain to secure.

Crochet Stem:

With brown, chain 6

DC in the 3rd chain from the hook, HDC, SC, Slip Stitch, chain 1

Tie off with a long tail and pull through the chain stitch to secure.

Using a yarn needle, attach the leaf and stem to the top center of the base.

Crochet Paper Coffee Cozy

Paper Coffee Cozy Base:

With white, chain 35

Rows 1-13: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail and pull through the chain stitch to secure.

Using a yarn needle, stitch pink and blue lines onto your mug so that it looks like a sheet of lined paper. I did three horizontal rows of light blue and one vertical row of pink.

Cozy Assembly / Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.

  • Trim any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.

Faces:

Secure the safety eyes in place. I use a wire cutter to snip the excess post from the back of the eyes. This helps the eyes to lie as flat as possible against the mug.

Using a yarn needle and black yarn stitch on a cute little mouth. I like to create my mouths by making a letter V that isn't pulled too tight so it curves.
