Christmas Tree Cozy - Free Crochet Pattern

Updated: Mar 26

Hello, hi & welcome back! I'm so excited to share my free crochet pattern for this adorable Christmas Tree Cozy! This is a minimalist, Scandinavian crochet design that brings the perfect amount of holiday cheer to your mug without overwhelming the eyes. These coffee mug cozies work up super quickly and make wonderful holiday gift ideas!

This coffee sleeve is comprised of the coffee sleeve base which is crocheted in rows to create a flat rectangle. The tree is stitched onto the cozy using a tapestry needle and the button is added to the top of the tree using a traditional needle and thread. The coffee sleeve base is seamed together at the end also using a tapestry needle. The finished coffee cozy measures approximately 3.5" tall by 4" wide when lying flat. This pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

Stitches:

This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

  • Chain

  • SC - Single Crochet

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 28 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 29 and each row will be 28 stitches.

Coffee Sleeve Base Crochet Pattern:

With Cream, chain 35

Rows 1-12: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail and pull through the last chain 1 stitch to secure

Christmas Tree:

This part is most helpful to see in the video tutorial above.

  • Using a tapestry needle and green yarn, create one vertical stitch from top to bottom in the center of your work. I call this the 'base'.

  • Then, create seven 'zig-zags' across the base (each zig-zag will have two pass-throughs of yarn).

  • These zig-zags will gradually get smaller as you work toward the top of the tree base.

  • Leave a little space at the top of the base for the snowflake star.

  • Tie off and trim any excess yarn.

  • Using a traditional needle and thread, attach the snowflake button to the top of the tree securely.

Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side out (Tree on the inside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • I like to tie off by double/triple knotting the tails together on the inside and trimming any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.
