Pattern Design + Construction:

I live for fall colors, the coziness of the season and all that it brings with it. My inspiration for this pattern was to harness the look and feel of fall into a simple home décor piece. These rustic crochet pumpkins are one of my favorite home décor patterns I've designed.

Using soft and bulky yarn, this beginner friendly pattern is worked into flat rows to create a square. The back loop only, half double crochet stitch creates eye-catching texture while keeping the pattern straight-forward and simple. The square is joined together using slip stitches to create a tube. The top and bottom are seamed together using a tapestry needle, but let's not forget the fiberfill stuffing. The authentic stem and leather bow make the perfect finishing touches.

Crochet Pumpkin Sizing

The finished crochet pumpkins measure approximately 8 inches wide by 6 inches tall; however, adjusting the sizing is easy! This pattern consists of 15 rows of 15 stitches per row. For a larger or smaller pumpkin, one simply needs to increase or decrease the base chain stitches and row count as long as they are the same number. For instance, to make a slightly larger pumpkin you may chain 22 (20 plus the chain 2) and 20 rows. Then you would crochet 20 rows of 20 stitches per row.

Yarn:

I chose Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn for these rustic crochet pumpkins because it's one of my favorite bulky yarns to work with. I like the variety of color options and availability at my local craft stores and online. As you can see in my pictures, this soft and bulky yarn creates a gorgeous texture on these pumpkins. Using quality bulky yarn makes these pumpkins quick to whip up!

This yarn is a super bulky weight category 6. You could easily substitute brands/colors as long as they are similar.

Crochet Pumpkin Seam:

Place both ends of the base together (the foundation chains and the row you just finished) and slip stitch them together all the way down. Once you reach the end, chain one and tie off with a long tail.

Rustic Crochet Pumpkins Stem & Bow:

I chose to use a stick from my back yard to create realistic and affordable stems for my pumpkins! I found a stick that fit the size of my pumpkins and trimmed it down to fit perfectly! I also love the idea of using large cinnamon sticks for stems, adding the scent of fall to elevate this project.

The bow embellishment would be adorable as jute or ribbon, but I was drawn to the look of leather combined with the yarn texture and real stick stem. It felt very rustic and completed the look I was going for. These small leather cords are available in most craft stores and online.

Top and Bottom Closure:

Using a tapestry needle, weave the long tail in and out around one of the openings pulling it closed as you go. See the video tutorial if you need further details.

Add your stuffing to the desired plumpness (less is more since this bulky yarn can be seen through if overstuffed).

Insert your yarn needle through the bottom center of the hole you just closed and bring it up through the center of the stuffing and out of the top. Place your stem into the center as a guide.

Now, repeat the weaving around the edges of the top opening until it is closed around your stem securely.

Carefully insert your needle down through the top center and out the bottom, pulling tight to create the pumpkin shape in the center.

Tie off at the bottom and trim any excess yarn.

Add your cute leather bow!
