Pattern Design + Construction

The Crochet Christmas Tree Cuddler is the cutest, cuddliest companion for the holidays and sure to bring some holiday cheer! The simple design makes a great Christmas photo prop for little ones or a fun, handmade holiday gift idea. It pairs well with my crochet gingerbread man and crochet reindeer cuddler! I would classify this pattern as beginner friendly since the most challenging stitch is the magic circle.

Each Christmas Tree Cuddler consists of the front and back panel, arms, legs and star. The front and back panels are joined with a round of single crochet and stuffed. The arms, legs and star are attached to the body panels using a tapestry needle. The finished crochet cuddler measures approximately 8-10 inches tall. You could easily make a larger version by increasing the size of your crochet hook and yarn!

Yarn:

We'll be using medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn for this crochet Christmas tree cuddler pattern. This is my favorite yarn weight to work with for crochet rag dolls and it has a great price point. It's versatile and wears well while also being soft and cozy which is perfect for a lovey or cuddler pattern! You could easily substitute brands of worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

For this tutorial, I used the following yarn:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Café Latte

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Sungold

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Mid Green

I Love This Yarn in the color Mid Green used for the Crochet Christmas Tree Cuddler free pattern.

If you'd like to use all Red Heart Super Saver colors, I think good substitutes for the Sungold and Mid Green would be Gold and Tea Leaf.

Chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in your end and pull through that chain stitch to secure.

Face:

Using black yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch on half circle eyes and a mouth onto the front panel.

Arms and Legs:

Make 2 green arms and 2 brown legs.

Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)

Round 2: 2 SC in the first stitch, SC in the next* (9 stitches)

Rounds 3-4: SC in each stitch (9 stitches)

Slip stitch into the first stitch of the next round, chain 1, tie off with a long tail.

Pull the tail through the chain 1 stitch to secure.

Stuff the shorter tail from the beginning of the project into the opening and stitch the opening closed.

Set aside for assembly.

Crochet Star (Make 2):

With gold yarn,

Round 1: In a magic circle, chain 1, SC 10, pull magic circle tight, slip stitch into the first SC of the round

Round 2:

We will repeat the following steps 5 times to make the five points of the star:

  • Chain 5, SC in the 3rd chain from your hook, HDC, DC (this makes 1 point)

  • To join the point to the base, skip 1 SC on the base of the round and slip stitch into the next stitch

  • Repeat

After the last stitch, chain 1 and tie off pulling through that chain 1 to secure.

Weave the ends into the back where you can make sure that center of your magic circle is pulled tight and tie the two ends together to keep it secure.

Trim any excess yarn.

Leave a long tail on one of the sides to assemble.

Star Assembly:

Line up both sides of the star with the right sides facing outward and stitch together securely with a yarn needle and the long gold tail. Set aside without trimming tail.

Crochet Christmas Tree Cuddler Assembly:

  • Line up both sides of the base panels (making sure the face is on the outside).

  • Join the front and back together with a round of single crochet.

  • Be sure to add your stuffing before closing entirely and tying off.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, attach the arms, legs and star.

  • Tie off, weave in and trim any excess yarn.
