Hot Cocoa Mug Cozy - Free Crochet Pattern

Updated: 2 days ago

Hello, hi & welcome back! I'm so excited to share my free crochet pattern for this adorable Hot Cocoa Mug Cozy! The sweet little face and snowflakes brighten any winter day! This coffee cozy is a quick crochet project and uses beginner-friendly stitches!

Each coffee cozy is crocheted in rows to create a flat rectangle. The edges are seamed together using a tapestry needle and the mug handle embellishment as well as the face and snowflakes are added at the end. The finished mug cozy measures approximately 4 inches tall by 4 inches wide when lying flat. This pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

Stitches:

This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

  • Chain

  • SC - Single Crochet

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 28 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 29 and each row will be 28 stitches.

Coffee Cozy Base:

With red, chain 35

Rows 1-13: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Row 14: SC in the back stitch only in each stitch, chain ,1 tie off with a long tail, turn (34 stitches)

Row 14 (2nd color): With brown, SC in the front stitch only (will actually be the back stitch since we turned) in each stitch in the same row we just completed, chain 1, tie off with a medium tail.

(You've turned the work as if you were moving on like normal, but you're using brown in the other side of the previous row instead of creating a new row.)

Handle:

With red, chain 16

Rows 1-2: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (15 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail.

Assembly:

  • Fold the coffee sleeve with the wrong side out and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a yarn needle and the long tail stitch the rough ends together.

  • Tie off and trim any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.

  • Using the long tail on the handle, attach the handle to the mug (I put mine over the seam to make it less obvious).

Face and Snowflake Embellishment:

  • Attach the safety eyes

  • Stitch on a cute little mouth with black yarn and a tapestry needle.

  • With white yarn, stitch on some snowflakes around the sides and back of the mug (without covering the face).
