This Crochet Santa Mustache Cozy is a free pattern here on my blog! These holiday mug cozies make quick crochet gift ideas! Below you'll find the free pattern and video tutorial!
Pattern Design + Construction:
This free crochet pattern is quick to make and warms the heart along with your mug! The simple stitches used make this pattern great for beginners; the mustache is the most challenging portion, but it's only one row! It is sure to add a fun holiday touch to your morning brew.
The coffee cozy base is crocheted in flat rows to create a rectangle. The mustache is crocheted separately and attached to the cozy using a tapestry needle. The cozy is then seamed together using a tapestry needle. The finished coffee cozy measures approximately 3.5" tall by 4" wide when lying flat. This pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (details further down).

Yarn:
This free pattern is created using medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn. I really enjoy designing coffee cozies using worsted weight yarn since it wears well while also being soft and warm. It's the weight of yarn I consistently have on hand in a variety of colors. Below I've listed the specific brands and colors I've used, but you could easily substitute worsted weight as long as the ounces per gram are similar!
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Sungold
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color White
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Cherry Red

Mug Size Adjustment
This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.
Coffee Sleeve Base:
With red yarn, chain 35
Rows 1-4: SC 34, chain 1 (34 stitches)
On the last stitch of the 4th row, switch to black leaving a long red tail.
Rows 5-6: SC 34, chain 1 (34 stitches)
On the last stitch of the 7th row, switch to red leaving a long black tail.
Rows 7-12: SC 34, chain 1 (34 stitches)
Tie off with a long tail and pull through the last chain 1 stitch to secure.
Santa's Belt Buckle:
Using gold yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch a cute little square belt buckle in the center of the black rows. Tie off on the back side and trim any excess yarn.
Santa's Mustache:
With white yarn, chain 19
slip stitch, slip stitch, SC, DC, DC, TC, TC, DC, slip stitch
Then in reverse,
slip stitch, DC, TC, TC, DC, DC, SC, slip stitch, slip stitch
chain 1, tie off with a long tail and pull through that chain stitch to secure.
Using our tapestry needle and the long white tail, stitch on the adorable mustache in the center above the belt buckle. Tie off and trim any excess white yarn.
Cozy Assembly / Invisible Seam:
Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (mustache on the inside) and line up the rough edges.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.
Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.
Trim any excess yarn.
Turn right side out.
