Hello, hi & welcome back! I'm so excited to share my Sloth Coffee Cozy free crochet pattern with you! This is a quick crochet project and the most adorable mug companion. These cute little sloths also make great handmade gift ideas.
This sloth coffee sleeve is comprised of the base which is worked in a flat rectangle. The face, eyes, and rosy cheeks are crocheted separately and attached to the base with a tapestry needle. The completed coffee cozy is then seamed up with a tapestry needle. The finished piece measures approximately 4" tall and 4.5" wide when lying flat. This pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

Mug Size Adjustment
This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 28 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 29 and each row will be 28 stitches.
Sloth Coffee Cozy - Free Crochet Pattern
Coffee Cozy Base:
With light brown yarn, chain 35
Rows 1-15: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)
Tie off with a long tail.
With cream yarn, chain 10
Row 1: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (9 stitches)
Row 2: 2 SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 7 stitches, 2 SC in the last, chain 1 (11 stitches)
Row 3: 2 SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 9 stitches, 2 SC in the last, chain 1 (13 stitches)
Rows 4-9: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (13 stitches)
Row 10: SC in the first 6 stiches, chain 1 (6 stitches)
Row 11: SC dec, SC in the next 2 stitches, SC dec, chain 1 (4 stitches)
Row 12: SC dec, SC in the next 2 stitches, chain 1 (3 stitches)
Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.
Attach to the other side and repeat rows 10-12 without tying off.
We are going to create a border around the face to clean up the edges.
So here we are after the chain 1, continue left down the inside curve of the top with 2 SC, slip stitch into the center stitch we skipped in between the 'humps' and continue SC around until you've reached the beginning stitch of the border.
Slip stitch into the first stitch of the border.
Chain 1, tie off pulling through the chain stitch to secure.
Weave in loose ends and trim any excess yarn.
Eye Patches (make 2):
With dark brown yarn, chain 3
Row 1: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)
Row 2: 2 SC in the first, SC in the next, chain 1 (3 stitches)
Row 3: 2 SC in the first, SC in the next, chain 1 (4 stitches)
Rows 4-6: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (4 stitches)
Continue down the left side and around back to the top with a round of SC (not back accross the top of row 6 though). Chain 1 and tie off with a long tail.
With peach yarn,
Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 5, pull tight (5 stitches)
Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round, chain 1, tie off with a medium tail
Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, attach the eye patches to either side of the face base.
Using the dark brown yarn, stitch a little nose stitch in between the eye patches.
Using the long tails, attach the rosy cheeks at the bottom corners of the eye patches.
Attach the safety eyes.
Using the long tail, attach the face base to the coffee cozy base.
Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side out (face on the inside) and line up the rough edges.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.
I like to tie off by double/triple knotting the tails together on the inside and trimming any excess yarn.
Turn right side out.
