Unicorn Coffee Cozy - Free Crochet Pattern

Updated: Mar 25

Hello, hi & welcome back! I'm so excited to share my free crochet pattern for this adorable Unicorn Coffee Cozy! She adds a magical flare to your morning brew and a bit of happiness to your day! These are quick to whip up and make excellent handmade gift ideas for the unicorn lover in your life.

This coffee sleeve is comprised of the base which is worked in a flat rectangle. The ears and unicorn horn are worked onto the base and the flowers are crocheted separately then attached with a tapestry needle. The coffee cozy is then seamed up with a tapestry needle. The finished piece measures approximately 4" tall and 4.5" wide when lying flat. This pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

Yarn Colors:

I receive many questions regarding the specific yarn colors I use for my projects! Oftentimes, I use leftover colors in my yarn stash that I have lost the labels for or have acquired secondhand without labels, so I apologize if I cannot list them all each time! Below are the specific brands/colors I do know for this particular pattern! The pink and purple flowers in the video tutorial differ slightly in color from the flowers in the pictures for the blog post. The colors listed below are for the brighter versions in the video tutorial.

  • I Love This Yarn in the color 'White'

  • Red Heart Super Saver in the color 'Black'

  • Red Heart Super Saver in the color 'Pretty 'N Pink'

  • Red Heart Super Saver in the color 'Minty'

  • Red Heart Super Saver in the color 'Light Jasmine'

  • Yellow (Sorry, I'm not sure!)

Stitches:

This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

  • Chain

  • SC - Single Crochet

  • SC dec - Single Crochet Decrease

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 28 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 29 and each row will be 28 stitches.

*You'll want to consider the ears in your size adjustment and make sure they end up evenly spaced accordingly depending on how many stitches you increase/decrease; the goal is to have the entirety of both ears visible on the edges of your mug when looking straight forward with however many stitches in-between the ears that requires*

It will naturally start to curl so we will just curl it into a circle/spiral flower!

Using a tapestry needle, secure the underside together and attach the flower to the base below the horn.

Assembly:

  • Fold the coffee sleeve with the wrong side out (flowers in the inside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long white tail, stitch the rough ends together.

  • Tie off and trim any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.
