Fox Coffee Cozy - Free Crochet Pattern

Hello, hi & welcome back! I'm so excited to share my Fox Coffee Cozy free crochet pattern with you! This simple fox pattern works up quickly and makes the most adorable mug companion.

This Fox Coffee Cozy is comprised of the coffee sleeve base which is crocheted in rows to create a flat rectangle, the ears which are added to the base, and the nose which is stitched onto the base using a tapestry needle. The coffee sleeve base is seamed together at the end using a tapestry needle. The finished coffee cozy measures approximately 4" tall by 4" wide when lying flat. This pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 28 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 29 and each row will be 28 stitches.

*You'll want to consider the ears in your size adjustment and make sure they end up evenly spaced accordingly depending on how many stitches you increase/decrease; the goal is to have the entirety of both ears visible on the edges of your mug when looking straight forward with however many stitches in-between the ears that requires*

Fox Coffee Cozy - Free Crochet Pattern

Coffee Sleeve Base:

With cream, chain 35

Rows 1-4: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

on the last stitch of the 4th row, switch to burnt orange leaving a long cream tail

Rows 5-12: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Turn and place a stitch marker in the chain 1 and pause with orange for now

Ears:

Row 13

With cream, join in the 11th stitch:

  • (in the 11th stitch: HDC, DC, TC, chain 2)

  • (in the 12th stitch: TC, DC, HDC) chain 1, tie off and pull through the chain stitch to secure

Skip the next 9 stitches

With cream, join in the 22nd stitch:

  • (in the 22nd stitch: HDC, DC, TC, chain 2)

  • (in the 23rd stitch: TC, DC, HDC) chain 1, tie off and pull through the chain stitch to secure

Pick up where you left off with the orange yarn and SC down the entire row, going up the sides and tops of the ears, except chain 2 at the top of each ear to create the points. Try to keep the cream tails on the ears pulled to the back of the coffee sleeve as you complete this row.

At the end of this row, chain 1 and tie off with a long tail pulling through the chain stitch to secure.

Secure and trim the cream tails from the ears on the back side of the coffee sleeve.

Assembly / Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side out (face on the inside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, stitch the rough ends together. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • I like to tie off by double/triple knotting the tails together on the inside and trimming any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.

Nose:

  • With black in a magic circle, SC 4

  • Pull tight and slip stitch into the first SC, chain 1

  • Tie off and pull through the chain stitch to secure

Using a yarn needle, stitch the nose onto the coffee sleeve in the center of the ears where the cream and orange yarn rows meet.

Eyes:

Using a tapestry needle and black yarn, stitch on two cute curved eyes above the nose. Tie off and trim any excess yarn.
